5 ways to wellbeing

Good mental health and wellbeing is about keeping well in terms of, how we feel about ourselves and others, our ability to make and keep friends and relationships and being able to overcome challenges in Life.

Everyone has a ‘mental health’, therefore there are things we can all be doing regularly to stay mentally healthy.

5 Ways to Wellbeing are 5 recommended actions we can all do that have been shown to support personal wellbeing, help us feel good and prevent mental health problems. These actions are:

  • connect
  • keep learning
  • Be active
  • take notice and
  • Give

Social connections with people around us- colleagues, friends, family and loved ones. can make us feel happier. Here’s some ideas for how you can connect more

  • Make time to check on friends, family and colleagues- this could be a quick conversation by telephone or a longer face to face meeting
  • Attend social events and take up opportunities for meeting new people
  • Take part in many events and festivals organised in Waltham Forest as part of our Borough of Culture activities
  • Join one of our connecting communities networks to work with people in your area to solve local problems- watch a short film

Keep learning

Continually mastering new skills, improves self-esteem and reduces depression and anxiety.

Waltham Forest Adult Learning service have a variety of courses you can get involved in ranging from creative courses, business and administration to gardening. The team also support with apprenticeships where people can get qualified whilst earning.

  • Sign up for a class and learn something new with WFALS
  • Rediscover an old interest, such as cooking, dancing or gardening
  • Take new cooking courses offered by Bags of Taste
  • Take up a free cycling lesson

Be active

Physical activity such as walking, jogging, exercise and sports not only great for our physical health but is known to be one of the best ways to make you look and feel good.

  • Go for a short walk or run at lunchtime
  • join a free, friendly local walking group such as our Feel Good walks
  • Attend local running and exercise clubs- Our parks offer free classes locally
  • Join Good gym to be part of community that runs whilst serving the community

Taking time out to reflect on our experiences, being aware of our feelings, what matters to us and the beautiful world around us can help us be more self-aware and foster our values and happiness. Here are few ideas

  • Spend time outdoors. Walthamstow wetlands and Lloyds park are beautiful sceneries in Waltham Forest

  • Take time to reflect on your projects at work
  • Take free online mindfulness training at
