Symptoms and Risk

How do you know if you have Hepatitis?

Hepatitis is the term used to describe inflammation of the liver. It's usually the result of a viral infection or liver damage caused by drinking alcohol and can seriously damage your liver and make you very ill if you do not get treatment.

Most people will not have any symptoms at first. Some people may experience signs of liver failure such as:

  • Headaches
  • Feeling/Being sick
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Yellowing of the eyes and skin (Jaundice)

Not everyone who has hepatitis will get symptoms they can see. The virus can harm your liver even if there are no signs.

 Are you at risk?

Hepatitis B and C are viruses passed through blood to blood contact and body fluids such as semen and vaginal fluids. Any of the following could transmit viral hepatitis:

  • Sharing needles or syringes for injecting drugs
  • Sharing razors (because people may have cut themselves)
  • Sharing snorting equipment for taking drugs.
  • Sex (where blood might be present)
  • Sharing toothbrushes (because of bleeding gums)
