Specialist Health Services for 5 to 11 years

In Waltham Forest we have a number of specialist services that support the health needs of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. Some of these services are provided in community clinics and some in schools. A referral is required to access all of these services.

Specialist Children’s Community Nursing Team at Wood Street Health Centre

Specialist Children’s Community Nursing comprises of three teams, all of whom work together to provide continuity of care for children and young people who have additional or specialist health needs.

Nutrition and Dietetic Service

The Nutrition and Dietetic Service in Waltham Forest provides education programmes (i.e. XPERT and DAFNE) for patients with Diabetes and 1 to 1 support in clinic settings. Community Clinics for individualised consultations for adults and children for a range of conditions. A proactive programme to manage obesity both in adults and children are offered.

Continence Advisory Service

The continence advisory service delivers a community bladder/bowel dysfunction service for patients with or without incontinence to provide effective clinical care, management and treatment.

Home Adaptations

Different health conditions which a person may suffer from can mean home adaptations may be required in the persons home. Installations might typically include a stair lift, level access shower, ramp, hoist, internal alterations (widening of doors) etc. or a combination of such items. Waltham Forest's Disabled Facilities Grant scheme provides financial assistance towards the cost of home adaptations needed to make a home fit for a disabled person.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is the art and science of maximizing engagement in everyday activities to enable people to perform the occupations that foster health and well-being.

In Waltham Forest, occupational therapy assessments are offered to people of all ages who are permanently resident in Waltham Forest, living with a permanent and substantial disability and have difficulty in carrying out essential activities of daily living by themselves.
