The John Dewey Independent Specialist College

The John Dewey ISC is a specialist college for people aged 16 - 25 who have severe and complex, or profound learning disabilities.  Based in Wood Green, North London, the John Dewey ISC is part of a larger group of services provided by Area 51 Education Ltd.

Learners receive an individualised programme of study focused on highly practical outcomes that are relevant to the individual's needs and aspirations.  For example, some of our students learn how to prepare simple meals and drinks, get dressed independently and make clear requests in order to prepare them for supported or independent living.  Others continue to develop literacy and numeracy skills, and develop their skills in problem-solving and working with others to prepare them for a specific job.

The college has a nurse onsite and provides in-house speech and language and occupational therapies.  It is open for 48 weeks of the year, through a combination of education and holiday scheme delivery.  Students attend for 5 days each week.

Local Offer

Description

The John Dewey ISC caters for people aged between 16 and 25 who would like to continue learning after they have left school.  To meet our entry criteria, you must be assessed by us as operating at above P2i on the National Curriculum P-Scales or at Milestone 3 or above on the Adult Pre-Entry Curricula.

We do not usually accept applications from anyone who is able to work at Entry level 3 or above as we feel your needs would be met better by a general further education college. We are able to support people who have severe or profound learning disabilities, including Down's Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Angelman's Syndrome or global delay and complex needs such as physical disabilities, sensory impairments, epilepsy, PEG feeding or challenging behaviours associated with learning disability.
