Walthamstow School for Girls
Walthamstow School For Girls is a truly inclusive, community school which values each of the nine hundred students equally and recognises them as individuals, all with gifts and talents. The school motto is “Neglect not the gift that is in thee” and at Walthamstow School For Girls the staff work very hard to provide opportunities for all the girls to succeed and maximise their potential.
The school has a tradition of academic excellence; students make exceptional progress from Year 7 to 11. I believe that this is achieved through a combination of high expectations, inspirational teaching and learning experiences that equip the girls with the skills to become confident and independent learners. There is strong pastoral support and regular monitoring, target setting and dialogue with students and parents/carers about their progress. In terms of value added measures, the school is consistently in the top 5% of all schools nationally.
There is a strong sense of pride in and commitment to the school amongst the girls. They recognise the high quality of the education they receive, they appreciate the rich programme of extra-curricular activities on offer and they enjoy being part of the school. Staff, likewise, recognise what a special place this is. Our teaching and support staff are of the highest calibre. They are well qualified, experienced and usually stay at the school for many years. The staff stability benefits the students enormously as they are taught by specialist teachers who know the girls well and find the environment rewarding and fulfilling.
The school was placed in the OFSTED Hall of Fame in recognition of our successive outstanding OFSTED reports. Research shows that a single sex environment empowers girls to realise their potential. Our students are encouraged to express themselves, to be creative, to have high aspirations and to challenge stereotypes. There is a strongly anti-racist and anti-sexist and inclusive ethos at Walthamstow School for Girls. We take very seriously our responsibility to prepare our students effectively for their further education, careers and future lives. Our aim is that our students leave the school as assertive, confident, caring, well balanced young women ready to take their rightful place in society.
We are proud of the rich and diverse heritage of our school community. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds, with many races, religions, and cultures represented. We speak thirty nine different languages, we celebrate our diversity and welcome the opportunities this gives us to learn from each other.
Another strength of the school is the quality of Home-School partnerships. For the girls to maximise their potential it is vital for parents/carers and the school to work productively together and there are many opportunities, formal and informal, for dialogue. The school produces a weekly newsletter and there are weekly Headteacher surgeries and our Governors occasionally organise drop in sessions open to the whole school community. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you would like to arrange an appointment to visit us.
